Answer
What do you think are the biggest needs in the world today?
What can be done to address these needs? (Look at current philathopic and charity organizations and idividuals who are taking action. What action are they taking?)
Try and search wider than Red Cross/World Vision/Oxfam ect.

Helpfull hints for a wider search...
  • Have you heard of Surfaid?

  • What need does Will I Am address. Does this make him an effective citizen?

  • Who is an advocate for sustainable living?

  • What is books in schools?

  • In NZ what is avaliable for kids who consistently turn up at school (any school) without having had breakfast and with no lunch?

    • An effective citizen is someone who affects changes in society to improve conditions for people.

      Term 3 Week 1

      Hi Room 1,
This week your homework time is dedicated to Science and Technology Fair Prep. This may not seem like a lot but if you are doing justice to your project it will take up a good chunk of your time.

Tomorrow I expect to see three thingsl isted in your log book.

      Science -
      Your aim/question
      Your hypothesis
The Variables - constants, dependant and two independents

      Notes on Variables
      1. The independent variable is the thing that is changed by the scientist.
      2. The scientist focuses his or her observations on the dependent variable to see how it responds to the change made to the independent variable. (The thing you measure/time etc)
      3. Constant variables are quantities that a scientist wants to remain constant.
Technologist - I will talk to you tomorrow be prepeared to answer questions. Remember you do need a logbook.

      Term 2 Week 10

      Hi Room 1,
This week your homework time will be dedicated to getting ready for the Science and Technology Fair.

Tomorrow I will ask you about your topic and give you an information booklet and planning sheet. We will then discuss your next steps.
THE AIM IS THAT BY THE END OF THE TERM YOU WILL BE READY TO DO YOUR EXPERIMENT OR MAKE YOUR PROTOTYPE IN THE HOLIDAYS.

Here are some topics to avoid ...
      1. Any product test. For example; What paper towel, fire lighter, fabric is better.
      2. Taste test or preference. For example; Can you taste the difference between Pepsi and Coke.
      3. Anything thing that requires Ethics approval. Usually these topics contain animals.
Remember topics like the corrosiveness of Coke, rusty nails, rotten fruit/bread, how fire proof is fabric, plants and different fertilizers/sunlight hours/water have all been done a million times before so please AVOID these.

The following website might help you pick an interesting topic.   www.sciencebuddies.org
Technology people I haven't found a help site for you yet but i'll keep looking.

Mathletics is also part of home work this week. Your reading should link to your Science and Technology fair topic.

E-mail me if you have any questions. rebeccac@remint.school.nz

P.S - your art looks fantastic!

      Term 2 Weeks 6 and 7

Hi Room 1. Sorry it has taken so long to up date the blog! I hope everyone has been working on Mathletics, the Vocab Log and at least 2 current event activities!

As well as this there is a small research project you will need to complete. I have created a new page on this blog called "A Person in Time" that gives you all the details you need to get started on your research.

Also just a friendly reminder to keep bringing the chocolate money in if you wish to be part of the prize draw.
