      Term 3 Week 1

      Hi Room 1,
This week your homework time is dedicated to Science and Technology Fair Prep. This may not seem like a lot but if you are doing justice to your project it will take up a good chunk of your time.

Tomorrow I expect to see three thingsl isted in your log book.

      Your aim/question
      Your hypothesis
The Variables - constants, dependant and two independents

      1. The independent variable is the thing that is changed by the scientist.
      2. The scientist focuses his or her observations on the dependent variable to see how it responds to the change made to the independent variable. (The thing you measure/time etc)
      3. Constant variables are quantities that a scientist wants to remain constant.
Technologist - I will talk to you tomorrow be prepeared to answer questions. Remember you do need a logbook.

THE AIM IS THAT BY THE END OF THE TERM YOU WILL BE READY TO DO YOUR EXPERIMENT OR MAKE YOUR PROTOTYPE IN THE HOLIDAYS.

Here are some topics to avoid ...
      1. Any product test. For example; What paper towel, fire lighter, fabric is better.
      2. Taste test or preference. For example; Can you taste the difference between Pepsi and Coke.

Remember topics like the corrosiveness of Coke, rusty nails, rotten fruit/bread, how fire proof is fabric, plants and different fertilizers/sunlight hours/water have all been done a million times before so please AVOID these.

The following website might help you pick an interesting topic.   www.sciencebuddies.org
Technology people I haven't found a help site for you yet but i'll keep looking.

E-mail me if you have any questions. rebeccac@remint.school.nz

      Term 1 Week 11

Good afternoon Room 1, I hope you had a great day!
Welcome to the last week of Term 1. It has been busy but enjoyable and quite productive I think!

Homework this week will be based around your Information Report. In order to get this done you will not have to do your current events work or reading activity this week. You will however, need to spend your homework time ensuring you are on track to meet Friday's 8:30am deadline.

By the end of today you should have finished your first draft and revised its paragraph and overall structure. If you had not then this becomes homework as I will be using languages time tomorrow to give you feedback on this draft. Tomorrow during school time you will have time after languages to do a second draft taking into account the feed back you have received. On Tuesday night for homework you will begin the publishing stage if your report has been signed of by me.

Don't forget that it is an important part of your final report to include graphics and sub headings to make your work more interesting and engaging. Use your knowledge of info-graphic design to help you with this.

And finally before I forget; make sure you have included a bibliography!

      How to…Make a Bibliography
      *Alphabetize by author’s last name.
*If no author, go by the first main word of the title.

      1. Book with one author:
Blodgett, E.D. Alice Munro. Boston: Twayne, 1988.

      2. Book with more than one author:
Elwood, Ann, and Linda C. Wood. Windows in Space. New York:
      Walker, 1982.

      3. Article in a magazine:
Daglish, Brenda, “A Matter of Interest.” Maclean’s, February 15, 1993,
      pp.36-37.

      4. Article in a newspaper:
Smith, Beverly, “Canadians Skate to Gold Medal,” The Globe and Mail,
      March 11, 1993. p. A1.

      5. Article in an encyclopedia:
Humber, William. “Bicycling.” The Canadian Encyclopedia, 1988.

      6. Video or Film:
Shooting Stars. Videotape. National Film Board of Canada (Toronto),
      1987. 49 min., 30 sec.

“Haida Gwaii – Islands of the People.” Nature. PBS, December 19, 1992.

      8. Interview:
Delaney, Daphne (musician). Personal interview, Toronto, April 10, 2006.

      9. Information from the Internet:

      Term 1 Week10

      Hi Room 1

Why doesn’t a bowl of flour, milk, sugar, cocoa and an egg taste like a chocolate cake?

This weeks main homework focus is the research you need to do to for your information report. Remember your homework task is to collect information from a number of sources; books, web, videos/documentaries and experts that will help you answer the question above. We will take notes from these at school.

      REMEMBER

You will need to find research that explains the science behind the journey of ingredients to cake. Concepts you will need to know about are…
      ·      Compounds
      ·      Mixtures
      ·      Chemical changes
      ·      Chemical reactions
You will still need to complete your other three pieces of homework - Reading and Vocab Log, Current Events, Mathletics.

      HAVE A GREAT WEEK!

      Sunday, 27 March 2011

      Extra's
      1. This week you will need to revise your New Zealand Mapping skills before our test on Friday. Make sure you know where the major cities, towns, straits, capes, seas and oceans are.

      Sunday, 20 March 2011

      Term 1 Week 8

      Good afternoon Room 1.
I'll start with a big thanks for making our camp a great one; it's a shame it was over so quick and now its back to the grind!

This week you will need to complete the three standard pieces of homework (current events, reading log and activity, mathletics). As well as this you need to publish your camp writing.
      Remember published work should be...
      • Typed in a font that is easy to read.
      • 1.5 spacing (between lines)
      • Error free
      • No more than one page in length. (Increase the size of the font so it can be read from the wall)
      • Paragraphed.
      Your published work should have...
      • A boarder
      • A catchy title
      • Your name on it.
You can e-mail me your published copy rebeccac@remint.school.nz or bring a printed copy to school.

      Research

Spend about 20 mins researching chemical reactions.
      • What is a chemical reaction
      • Why does it happen?
      • Example?
I would like to see everyone completing the full weeks homework this week.

      Sunday, 6 March 2011

      Term 1 Week 6

Only one week to go before camp Room 1; are you ready?
By now you should know what you need to contribute to your group for Monday's evening meal. Please share this info with the person in charge of the groceries at your house. We have also talked about what clothing and luggage you need to bring with you...don't forget your wet weather gear!

I am looking forward to seeing this weeks homework. I hope it is top quality! The most important part of the Current Events section is to explain why the story is newsworthy. Justify your answer with information from the article.

If you have any questions email me rebeccac@remint.school.nz

      Have a great week.
